The Role of High-Fidelity Maps in ADS Simulation

In simulation-based validation of automated driving systems (ADS), digital road networks form the spatial context in which scenarios are generated and executed. These maps do more than provide scenery—they determine the realism, relevance, and technical accuracy of every test case. Without them, even well-defined Operational Design Domains (ODDs) lack actionable terrain for validating system behavior.

In ReplicaR, maps are not static assets but foundational components that directly influence scenario construction, sensor simulation, and test execution. The ability to manage, customize, and validate these maps is essential for achieving reliable and repeatable test outcomes.

 

Managing Map Data with ReplicaR

To address this need, the ReplicaR platform introduces MyMaps, a dedicated application for managing road networks based on the ASAM OpenDRIVE® standard. MyMaps enables engineers to import, organize, and modify simulation-ready maps, whether sourced externally or provided by AAI.

The process begins by assembling a map catalogue tailored to the defined ODD. Engineers can browse existing maps representing diverse traffic environments across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland—or import their own high-definition (HD) OpenDRIVE® maps. For deeper customization, the RepliMap desktop tool provides advanced scene editing and trajectory integration.

All maps are validated using MapChecker, ensuring geometric and logical consistency in line with ASAM standards. This guarantees that all road data used for testing is compliant, connected, and free from artifacts that could compromise simulation results.

 

Customization and Visualization

The MyMaps interface includes tools for interactive browsing, map layering, and satellite imagery overlays. Engineers can zoom, annotate, and catalogue maps for specific projects or testing phases. Through simple visual cues and catalogue tags, relevant maps are quickly retrievable, supporting faster test planning and scenario execution.

These capabilities transform MyMaps from a passive repository into a dynamic workspace for managing simulation environments. Whether setting up early functional tests or late-stage validation campaigns, engineers gain full control over the geospatial elements of their test campaigns.

 

Standards Compliance and Reusability

All maps managed in MyMaps adhere to ASAM OpenDRIVE® specifications, making them compatible with other tools in the ReplicaR ecosystem and beyond. Exports and edits maintain standards compliance, supporting traceability and reuse across test iterations, vehicle platforms, or safety cases.

Combined with MyODD, MyMaps forms the core of a traceable, repeatable, and standards-aligned virtual testing environment.
